News of the recent school shooting in Connecticut has brought much
discussion about gun use and legality in the United States. I believe
this discussion shows how critical it is that we have a republic and not
a democracy. The setting of this recent tragic event naturally provokes deep
emotion with many who might wish, even for a moment, or forever, that no one could own a
gun by law and that that would somehow prevent these horrific events. According to principle based on facts and reason, rather than emotion, what laws could help prevent these tragedies? Or at least lessen their magnitude?
