News of the recent school shooting in Connecticut has brought much
discussion about gun use and legality in the United States. I believe
this discussion shows how critical it is that we have a republic and not
a democracy. The setting of this recent tragic event naturally provokes deep
emotion with many who might wish, even for a moment, or forever, that no one could own a
gun by law and that that would somehow prevent these horrific events. According to principle based on facts and reason, rather than emotion, what laws could help prevent these tragedies? Or at least lessen their magnitude?

I am very grateful to live in a Constitutional Republic and not a democracy. Our rights are in the Constitution as immovable objects (well, they're supposed to be). In a horrific event, like what happened at Sandy Hook, the right that is guarenteed in the Constitution to own a gun, could be taken in a day in a democracy. That goes for other rights too. If 51% of the people did not like people of my religion it could be banned in a democracy. A few Catholic colleges just won a lawsuit to ensure they would not have to cover contraceptives in their school insurance plans, because it violates their doctrine, even though Obamacare mandated that they cover it. This issue was very unpopular (which making someone buy anything should be since we're not a democracy), but in this issue the ideals of a republic won for the minority.
These are a few examples out of very many. It is very important to protect our Constitution. It's up to us. Our life, libery, and property rights hang in the balance.
